Don’t play the victim in your life story. Things will always happen that are outside of your control, they won’t go according to how you’d like them to go, but you can always choose your response the what happens. You can always choose your attitude towards any set of circumstances.

Don’t give anybody else power over your feelings and attitude. Nobody can make you “feel” a certain way. Only you have that power…whether you relinquish that power to somebody else is up to you.

10 tips to happiness

10 tips to happiness:

1. Spend time by yourself in solitude (preferably outside). Get away from the noise, even if for only 10 minutes per day.

2. Always be learning. Just because you’re out of school doesn’t mean you should stop learning. In fact, now you can learn about subjects of your choosing! Pick something that interests you and dig in.

3. Give (volunteer time, money, material items/goods, or advice). We are meant to be part of a community or tribe. Don’t only live for yourself. That’s lonely. Live to help others – family, friends, and strangers.

4. Do something hard everyday. Try challenging yourself and overcoming obstacles. Go work out, build something with your hands, read a novel that makes you think, plant a garden…the bigger the hurdle, the bigger your reward when you overcome it.

5. Live/act in alignment with your morals…do what is right, even when it’s tough and even when nobody else is looking. Do not boast about this. You are doing what you’re supposed to do. Don’t do it for the reward of other people’s approval. This also involves “tough love.” Doing or saying what needs to be done or said for the betterment of that individual, even if it means telling them what they don’t want to hear.

6. Treat others with kindness, regardless of their status or what they can “give” to you. Think of “The Golden Rule.”

7. Do not attribute malice to what could be ignorance. Especially in today’s world, where it seems we assume anyone with a different opinion than ours is evil, maybe they just don’t know what they don’t know. Maybe they don’t have the life experience you have. They may be blind to certain situations because they haven’t seen it first hand. And guess what? The same can be said about you. You’re not an all-knowing, perfect, empathetic individual. And hopefully as you go through life you figure some new things out and change your opinions from time to time. It’s not flip-flopping. It’s growing.

8. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Comparison is the thief of joy. Be happy with what you have.

9. Care about/for something. If you have interests/hobbies, you will have something to look forward to. If you have to take care of something (like a pet, child, or parent) or if you have a cause you believe in, then you will find purpose in life.

10. Smile…it will make you feel better and it will make others feel better. Smiling is contagious. Try to spread it.

8 Tips to Succeed in Business

To succeed in business, you need to do the following:

1) Hustle for new clients…until you’re well-known and have a history of getting clients what they want, it will be very difficult for them to find you. Instead, you have to find them! Be on social media, attend local meetups, go door knocking, cold calling, etc. The bottom line is you have to work to get new clients.

2) Pay…this isn’t always true (depending on the level of “success” you want to achieve), but it is true if you want to be the top in your field. I’m not saying you have to spend frivolously on things that don’t matter, but you do need to pay for marketing and advertising, have a well-built website, etc. You’ll also have your normal expenses to account for (any licenses, utilities, repairs, or big ticket items like a commercial vehicle). Just like the saying goes, “you have to spend money to make money.”

3) Save…once you start earning money, you can’t spend everything you make. If you do this, you’ll soon find out that the government wants their cut. After all, they put a lot of time and money into this business venture and risked losing it all if…wait, no, that was you. Regardless, the government does do some good (update roads, pay firefighters and the police force, etc.), even if they waste a lot of taxpayer dollars.

In addition to saving for taxes, you’ll also want to save for “stormy weather” like a couple of bad months of selling, a slow season, etc. Many financial experts recommend 3-6 months of personal savings, but most recommend even more (12 months or more) savings for your business. Don’t run your margins so thin that you can’t save any money. If you don’t save money and there happens to be a pandemic (*cough* coronavirus) which includes a shutdown of “non-essential” businesses, you’re screwed.

But in order to save money, you need to…

4) Charge what you’re worth. Be fair with your pricing. But don’t confuse fair with free. You have to get paid. Any business that is still in business needs to make a profit, otherwise they won’t be around for long.

On the other end of the spectrum, don’t charge a premium for something you’ve never done before. Everyone needs to start somewhere, but if you’ve never done something and you act like you’re an expert, you’re misleading the client. Eventually come back to bite you in the butt (and with that will come negative reviews), which is why I believe you should always…

5) Be honest…telling the truth isn’t always what the client wants to hear right then and there, but in the long run it is what’s best. You are only as good as your reputation. If you destroy your credibility, you destroy any trust that you may have built up with your existing and potential clients. That is a much harder hill to climb than being truthful from the get go.

6) Show up on time for appointments…This is the easiest thing you can do to start off on the right foot! It takes no skill to show up on time. If you’ve never met with someone before (or even if you have), don’t disrespect them by showing up late. If they made it a point to be somewhere at an agreed upon time, you should be there too. When you show up whenever you want, you’re essentially telling the other person that your time is more valuable than theirs. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that’s the best way to win business.

7) Communicate…set expectations for them, keep them in the loop on what’s happening, and if you don’t have an answer to one of their questions, let them know you’re working on it. When something bad happens, tell them face-to-face or call them if you need to, but never text/email bad news. Yes, it will be harder to do in person, but once again, it goes back to respecting the client. It shows you care and if you were in their shoes, you would probably want them to do the same.

8) Be personable…when everything else is equal with the competition, people buy from people they like. If you can build rapport with them, make them feel like you actually like them/care about them (which you should), and they don’t think you’re being disingenuous, you will win over a lot of potential clients that were on the fence.

Attitude

If you go into your day with a negative attitude, you’ll focus only on the negatives and the day will seem to take an eternity. People won’t enjoy talking with you and eventually will stop interacting with you if they don’t have to. But if you go into your day with a positive attitude, you are much more likely to have fun whatever you’re doing, the day will go quicker, and people will enjoy being around you. As a result, they’ll try to help you whenever they can because they want to see you succeed.

How do you improve your attitude? Start by smiling more. Smiling can instantly improve your mood (they even tell you to smile when you’re on the phone because it will lead to better results).

Next, stop taking yourself so seriously. Joke with others. Be able to laugh at yourself if you do something embarrassing. Choose to be happy with whatever you’re doing, including work. If you’re going to do something 40+ hours per week, would you rather enjoy your time there or hate it/count down the time until you get to leave? Just because you’re working on an important project doesn’t mean you can’t have fun doing it. In fact, you’ll probably do a better job and feel more life satisfaction if you’re having fun at work.

Keep everything in perspective. Most events are trivial over the span of our lifetimes. Don’t blow things out of proportion and make them bigger than they really are. So often it seems that we take the good things for granted and we over exaggerate the bad things. Stop doing that. Keep it in perspective.

Be generous and remember your manners. Performing random acts of kindness will make you feel better. Do something generous (whether it’s paying someone a compliment or paying for someone’s meal) and don’t expect anything in return. Also, say please and thank you frequently. Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean that you should forget your manners.

Lastly, stop complaining. Anytime you catch yourself about to complain, try to reframe whatever negative thought you had and make it a positive one. For example, instead of saying, “It’s too hot outside,” say, “It’s so sunny today!” Both statements can be true, but if you focus on the positive statement, you’ll have a better attitude.
